Another example is fen-phen, which is a combination of two drugs: fenfluramine or dexfen- fluramine, an appetite depressant, and phentermine, a type of amphetamine. Two drugs were approved for short-term use as diet aids separately but never gained popularity because they were not effective. The drug combination soared to popularity after a single study involving 121 patients. The FDA approved the drug in 1996 without long-term safety data on humans. After the approval surfaced the drug can cause potentially fatal pulmonary hypertension and heart valve problems, primarily in women. After continuing reports of valvular heart disease in patients, the FDA requested its withdrawal from the market in September 1997.
